NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Lauren Yanofsky scored a
game-high 22 points and Allie Beaulieu netted 12 points as the
Bates College women's basketball team defeated Norwich University,
70-64, in the Ed Hockenbury Classic championship game Saturday
afternoon at Andrews Hall.
Annie Burns, who was named the tournament's "Most Outstanding
Player," chipped in nine points, a game-high 10 assists and six
rebounds for the Bobcats (5-2). Christine McCall added seven points
and a team-high eight rebounds off the bench for Bates.
Norwich (5-2) was led by senior Jess Jaggars, who posted a
double-double with a team-high 16 points and a career-best 16
rebounds. Junior F Christine Daniels added a double-double of her
own, posting 14 points and 10 boards. Senior G Erica Rate
contributed 11 points for the Cadets, while senior G Ally Daniels
pitched in nine points and team-high five assists.
Bates scored the game's first four points, but Norwich came back
with six unanswered points to make it 6-4 at the 14:39 mark. An
18-7 run by the Bobcats gave the visitors a 22-13 lead with 8:36 to
play before halftime, but the Cadets reeled off seven straight
points to cut their deficit to 22-20 moments later. Bates led 27-25
before ripping off eight straight points to assume its largest lead
of the half (35-25) with 1:07 to play. Ally Daniels nailed a
three-pointer in the closing seconds to make it a 35-28 score at
the intermission.
A three-pointer by Rate and a jumper by Christine Daniels
trimmed the Cadets' deficit to two points (35-33) less than 90
seconds into the second half. The Bates lead was two (39-37) when
Yanofsky made a lay-up and McCall buried a triple to extend the
Bobcats' advantage to 44-37 at the 14:42 mark.
Free throws by Christine Daniels and sophomore F Tara Stevenson
helped the Cadets trim their deficit to three points (46-43) at the
13:21 mark, but a 12-2 spurt by Bates gave the Bobcats their
largest lead of the game (58-45) with 8:35 to play.
Norwich battled back to within five points on four occassions
down the stretch, but they could not get over the hump as Bates hit
its free throws to ice the game.
NU outrebounded Bates, 49-30, in the contest. The Bobcats held
an advantage from behind the three-point line, making 8-of-21
compared to 4-of-13 for the Cadets. Bates shot 42.4 percent
(25-of-59) from the floor, while Norwich hit 36.9 percent
(24-of-65) of its field goals.
Yanofsky earned all-tournament honors, as did Christine Daniels.
Castleton State's Katie Hoxsie and Maine-Machias' Sabree Rodriguez
rounded out the all-tournament team.
Norwich will close out its first semester schedule on Tuesday,
Dec. 8, when the Cadets travel to Johnson, Vt., to tangle with
in-state rival Johnson State College. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
