NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University women's basketball team closed the 2024-25 season in emphatic fashion on Senior Day, sinking Mitchell College, 85-55, in the final Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) clash of the regular season in Andrews Hall on Saturday afternoon.
Haley Brewster (Virginia Beach, Va.) made program history in her final collegiate outing, going 9-12 from beyond the arc and 13-18 on field goals to finish with 35 points, alongside eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals. With her nine-made three-pointers, Brewster's performance sits atop the individual single-game record, breaking the previous record of eight, set by both
Erica Rate '10 (Feb. 25, 2010, vs. Albertus Magnus)Â and
Kelsey Lotti '15 (Dec. 8, 2011, vs. Southern Vermont). Her 75.0% shooting clip from long range also places her first on the three-point field goal percentage leaderboard, surpassing Rate's mark of 72.7% from Feb. 25, 2010.
Brewster was joined in double-digits by
Kiley O'Brien (Kingston, Mass.) and
Maren McGinn (Georgia, Vt.), as both added 21 and 10 points, respectively, on a combined 14-23 shooting mark.Â
Erika Thomas (Burlington, N.C.) dished out six assists, while
Jessica Zimmerman (Turner, Maine) also handed out five helpers.
The contest quickly appeared to be in favor of Norwich, as Brewster and O'Brien ignited the offense on a swift 5-0 spurt to open the frame. An answer from three-point land by the Mariners prompted a 7-2 run by the visitors, which was erased by back-to-back baskets by Brewster and
Lily Briggs (Fair Haven, Vt.). Another five-point advantage by the Cadets proceeded to be neutralized, however, as Mitchell rallied to claim a 15-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Mariners held onto momentum out of the gates, maintaining a 21-all deadlock with 6:42 remaining in the second quarter, but a pair of Brewster treys spurred a dominant 22-3 run for the Cadets, who built an insurmountable 19-point edge late in the frame.
Norwich's lead crossed the 20-point threshold seconds into the third stanza, ballooning to as large as 27 on two different occasions off shots from Brewster and
Mallorie Chalmers (Milton, Vt.). Mitchell trimmed the advantage to 23 with eight minutes remaining, but it proved to be the closest the visitors could get to Norwich.
Another stretch of consecutive Brewster and Chalmers buckets would grant the Cadets their largest lead of the day at 33, as
Shenale Hadunnetthi Rannuluge (Flushing, N.Y.) matched that lead with 27 seconds remaining, aiding the Cadets to seal the 30-point victory.
The Cadets could not be topped in several statistical categories, maintaining dominant advantages in points off turnovers (31-6), points in the paint (34-14), and fast break points (15-7), while also carrying edges in bench points (17-10) and second-chance points (14-12). Norwich was blistering from the floor, finishing with a 44.2% shooting clip while tallying a 41.4% mark from three-point land.
Prior to tip-off, Norwich celebrated Senior Day, honoring Thomas, Brewster, and McGinn for their lasting impacts and contributions to the women's basketball program. The Cadets also recognized Brewster and McGinn immediately after the game in a special ceremony focusing on Norwich's five graduating 1,000-point scorers, alongside the men's basketball team's trio of graduating 1,000-point scorers inÂ
