BRIGHTON, Mass.- After a brief homestand, the Norwich Women's Soccer team hit the road to continue Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play against Simmons.
The first half opened as a defensive stalemate, but halfway through, the Cadets began to have a stranglehold on the territorial play. Norwich peppered Sharks goalkeeper Mikaela Marie Javar with several shots. Still, Javar kept the game scoreless at the half, making four saves as the Cadets held an 11-2 edge in shot attempts and took all five corners.
On their first opportunity of the second half, Norwich finally broke through.
Lily Briggs (Fair Haven, Vt.) dribbled down the left side of the field before sending a cross into the box that banked off
Heidi Smith (Sammamish, Wash.) and found
Jasmine Hackman (Clear Brook, Va.), who found the bottom left corner to break the ice in the 52
nd minute.
Eight minutes later, Simmons found the equalizer with a header off a corner kick. Â The Sharks began to press, but
Hannah Jenkins (Manchester, N.H.) kept the score at one goal apiece.Â
In the final twelve minutes, the dam burst with the Cadets finding the back of the net three times. In the 78
th minute,
Kat Probst (Gouverneur, N.Y.) evaded several defenders and sent home the tiebreaker. Six minutes later,
Colby Magoon (Loudon, N.H.) sent a ball from long distance to the top right corner. Magoon struck one more time courtesy of Briggs and Smith in the 87
th minute to clinch the final score.
Along with Magoon's brace and Hackman's first goal in maroon and gold, Briggs and Smith notched two helpers each in a game where the Cadets outshot the Sharks 21-9, with 11 of them on target.
Norwich will continue GNAC play when they return home to take on Regis on Friday, Oct. 3, at 5 p.m. during Parents and Family Weekend.
