Men's Rugby: Norwich claims NACRC 7s Championship, secures seventh straight trip to nationals

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Norwich University men's rugby team continued its run of dominance on Sunday, capturing the North Atlantic Collegiate Rugby Conference (NACRC) 7s Championship in emphatic fashion.

The Cadets went a perfect 5-0 on the day, defeating five programs to clinch their seventh consecutive trip to the Collegiate Rugby Championship (CRC) National Tournament.

Norwich opened the tournament with a 26-12 victory over UMass Lowell, then rolled past rival University of Vermont, 17-5. In a tight third match, the Cadets edged the United States Coast Guard Academy, 15-12, before blanking the University of Maine, 35-0, to advance to the championship.

Facing Coast Guard once again in the final, Norwich delivered its most complete performance of the day, dominating from start to finish in a 31-5 title-clinching victory.

With the championship win, Norwich improves to a staggering 34-1 record in NACRC 7s competition over the past seven years, reaching the conference final in all seven seasons and reclaiming the title after falling to Maine in last year's championship.

"Our boys battled under challenging conditions to go 5-0," said Head Coach Bob Weggler.  "Our coaching staff is incredibly proud of what they accomplished on Sunday. We have a senior class of 7s players who have achieved excellence throughout their entire careers, and this championship adds another chapter to that legacy."

Norwich now turns its attention to the NCR Collegiate Rugby Championship National Tournament, with brackets set to be revealed during Selection Saturday on April 19 at 7:00 PM ET, live on The Rugby Network and YouTube.

The NCR 7s National Tournament will be held the following weekend in Gaithersburg, Md., where the Cadets will look to make another deep run on the national stage.
