NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University rifle team collected the 2024-25 season's final Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference (MAC) Smallbore Athlete of the Week, with
Aiden Burris (Marietta, Ga.) earning plaudits after this past weekend's NCAA Qualifier, as announced by the league office this week.
Burris claimed his first MAC Smallbore Athlete of the Week accolade after shooting his second-highest smallbore mark of the season, tallying a 560 mark at the NCAA Qualifiers hosted by Army on Saturday, Feb. 22.
In addition, Burris logged a 539 total in air rifle, finishing with a 1099 aggregate.  His score ranked second on the team and ninth overall, topping all shooters from conference rival MIT.
After the NCAA Qualifiers, the Cadets rank third in the smallbore among the MAC's nine competing teams, maintaining an average of 2180.33, just barely trailing the University of Rhode Island's 2202.14 mark. Mount Aloysius College leads the conference in smallbore with a 2242.57 average.
Burris joins teammates
Ben Kelley (Niantic, Conn.) and
Sophia Ashford (Northfield, Vt.) in Cadets receiving MAC Athlete of the Week laurels this season. Norwich and Mount Aloysius remain the only institutions in the MAC to have multiple Smallbore Athlete of the Week honorees this year.
The Cadets will return to the range this weekend, traveling to conference foe Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for the MAC Championships on Saturday, Mar. 1, and Sunday, Mar. 2. The smallbore competition will begin on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. while air rifle will be held on Sunday, starting at 9:30 a.m. The Cadets will aim to improve upon their fourth-place finish in last season's nine-team field, when MIT claimed their first-ever conference championship.
