FARMINGTON, Maine - The Norwich University women's basketball team concluded a perfect 2-0 trip to the state of Maine on Saturday, flying past the University of Maine Presque Isle, 93-64, in the Cadets' final game of the University of Maine-Farmington (UMF) Classic on Saturday afternoon.
Maren McGinn (Georgia, Vt.) led all scorers, dominating inside to finish with 24 points on a 9-15 clip to pace five double-digit Norwich performers.Â
Siobhan O'Donnell (Queens, N.Y.) set a new career-high, going 8-13 off the bench to finish with 16 points, while
Haley Brewster (Virginia Beach, Va.) netted 15 points in 19 minutes.Â
Erika Thomas (Burlington, N.C.) and
Kiley O'Brien (Kingston, Mass.) went for 12 and 10 points, respectively, to round out the double-figure scorers.
The Cadets rushed out to a swift 9-0 lead and never looked back, despite a subsequent challenge by the Owls that whittled the lead back down to two. A pair of McGinn freebies ignited another spurt out of Norwich, this time a 14-0 run to end the opening quarter.
Back-to-back jumpers from O'Brien and O'Donnell ballooned the lead to 18, but another answer by Maine-Presque Isle brought Norwich's edge within single-digits. Maintaining just a 36-30 lead, the Cadets exploded to put the game out of reach the rest of the day, surging behind a 15-0 rally to take a 21-point advantage into the break.
Norwich's advantage blossomed to as large as 29 in the third quarter, made possible by an old-fashioned three-point play from
Mallorie Chalmers (Milton, Vt.). The Cadets hovered around that range for the final frame, never allowing the Owls back within striking distance as a
Paige Dwinell (Graniteville, Vt.) put-back before the buzzer gave Norwich the 29-point decision.
The Cadets decimated Maine-Presque Isle in numerous statistical categories, including in points in the paint (56-12) and bench points (32-3) while also holding edges in points off turnovers (24-23) and fast break points (7-0). Norwich thrived on the boards, outrebounding the Owls, 61-28, while tallying 28 helpers on 39 made field goals.
Norwich's offense could not be stopped, made possible by a 49.4% mark from the floor, while the Cadet defense restricted the Owls to 30.5% on the day.
Jovanna Oliva paced the Owls' offense with 18 points, leading a trifecta of double-digit scorers.
Another road trip awaits the Cadets, as Wednesday, Nov. 20, yields a 6:00 p.m. showdown at intrastate rival Vermont State University Johnson. Norwich then takes Andrews Hall for the team's home opener on Saturday, Nov. 23, hosting Plymouth State at 1:00 p.m.
