Women's Basketball: Cadets earn third-straight victory, defense shines in rout of Badgers

JOHNSON, Vt. - The Norwich University women's basketball team secured their third-straight victory of the young season, taking down Vermont State University Johnson, 66-32, in a non-conference bout at Carter Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.

Haley Brewster (Virginia Beach, Va.) was the lone player between both squads to notch double-digits, going 7-12 from the floor to finish with 17 points.  Maren McGinn (Georgia, Vt.) and Jessica Zimmerman (Turner, Maine) checked in next in the box score, tallying eight and seven points, respectively.

Norwich's defense was on full display after the Badgers enjoyed an early 5-5 tie with the Cadets, as the visitors broke open the deadlock on a 17-1 run to close the first quarter.  That stretch included an 8-0 spurt comprised of baskets from McGinn, Brewster, Shenale Hadunnetthi Rannuluge (Flushing, N.Y.), and Zimmerman.

The Cadets continued the rout throughout the second frame, holding the Badgers to just five points while growing their lead to as large as 28 in the half, courtesy of a Paige Dwinell (Graniteville, Vt.) jumper with 19 seconds left.

The third stanza was much of the same, as Norwich jumped out of the gates on a 10-0 run before VTSU Johnson responded with back-to-back treys to find some life.  It was short-lived, however, as the Cadets' lead surpassed the 40-point plateau on a Brewster jumper to make the game 57-17.

Norwich's edge ballooned to as large as 42 on a pair of occasions during the fourth quarter on baskets from Erika Thomas (Burlington, N.C.) and Hadunnetthi Rannuluge.  The Badgers again captured some momentum, ending the game on an 8-0 run of their own, but Norwich's seismic advantage was too much to overcome.

The Cadet offense was blistering inside the arc, as the Cadets shot 27-44 on two-pointers and 55.6% overall on field goals.  Contrarily, Norwich's defense stifled VTSU Johnson, holding the Badgers to just 24.4% on the game.

Norwich held leads in several categories, including in points off turnovers (20-9), second chance points (8-0), bench points (23-7), points in the paint (22-12), and fast break points (7-2).

The Cadets will take to the floor one last time before Thanksgiving break, returning to Andrews Gym for their home opener on Saturday, Nov. 23, hosting Plymouth State University in a 1:00 p.m. clash.
