Women's Soccer: Cadets Leash Bulldogs with Second Half Outburst

NORTHFIELD, Vt.- The Norwich Women's Soccer team earned their second victory of the season, and first in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action Saturday afternoon when they defeated Dean 4-2 on the back of three unanswered goals in the second half.

At the end of the opening period, the Bulldogs held a 1-0 lead due to an individual effort from Jazzy Sztyler-Magee in the 36th minute. However, possession was split evenly between the two squads with Dean holding a 5-4 advantage in shots and both teams taking two corners.

Immediately out of the break, sophomore Bella Roy (Weare, N.H.) won a possession battle and sent the ball ahead to Samantha Penacho (New Bedford, Mass.) who moved into the box, maneuvered around the defender, and tapped a shot into the bottom left corner to tie the game in the 51st minute. Nearly two minutes later, Sztyler-Magee was sent in on a breakaway which she converted on giving the Bulldogs the lead again.

That Bulldog lead would only last four minutes. In the 56th minute, Penacho would dribble down the left side of the field before passing off to Antonia Pellon (Pownal, Vt.) before giving it off to Roy who put a ball out of the keeper's reach from 25 yards out. In the 73rd minute, Roy would net the second end of a brace with a flying header off a Lindsey Duggan (Belmont, N.H.) corner putting the Cadets ahead. Pellon would net the dagger in the 81st minute with Penacho tallying her second assist on the day and Rachael Rohe (Bedford, N.H.) getting the secondary helper capping off a second half where Norwich outshot Dean 10-3 (6-2 on goal).

"After a pretty slow start in the first half, it was great to see the team put all the pieces together and really take control of the second half," said Head Coach Jared Cipriano. "We keep building momentum as we head into the second half of the season and I'm excited to see what we can accomplish in the games ahead."

As the calendar turns to October, the Cadets will look to keep building on that momentum when they play host to New England College at 7 PM on Wednesday night.
