NORTHFIELD, Vt. – To round out the athletic events of Homecoming weekend, the Norwich Women's Soccer team played their third consecutive home game when they took on Saint Joseph's College of Maine Saturday night, whom they played to a 1-1 draw.
Both squads were held off the score sheet in the first half with the Monks holding a 6-2 edge in shots and took all three corners. Business picked up in the second half for both sides. After a couple of shot attempts early on, the Cadets got possession in the attacking midfield when
Ameya Moncrieffe (Brampton, On.) sent the ball to
Celine Juneau (Chazy, N.Y.) who centered a ball to
Samantha Penacho (New Bedford, Mass.) who shook the defender and put a shot just out of reach of the keeper to put the home team ahead in the 54
th minute.
The Monks kept pressing the attack attempting nine shots in the final frame, but senior goalkeeper
Kayla Dawson (Brooksville, Fla.) shut them down making four stops to go along with her four from the first half. However, Saint Joseph's would finally break through in the 85
th minute when Tatum Hancock sent a shot off the crossbar and in the net to knot things up. In the final minutes, the Monks took three of their nine corners in the half but could not find the tie breaker.
"I'm very happy with the team's performance tonight," Head Coach
Jared Cipriano said. "They put a lot of work in every day in training and it's great to see it all starting to come together on the field. I hope to keep building and improving as we have more big conference games coming up."
On deck for the Cadets, they will head south to New Haven for a 6 PM kickoff with Albertus Magnus on Sept 26.
