Men's Rugby: Cadets Take Home First Place in UNH 7s Tournament

The Norwich University Men's Rugby team showed dominance throughout the Milley's Memorial Rugby Sevens Tournament hosted by the University of New Hampshire. The Cadets outscored their opponents in pool play by an average 52 points while shutting out the opposition until the championship game.

Out of the gate in their first matchup of the tournament against the host team's B-squad, captain Leo Clayburgh (Brussels, Belgium) started off the day strong with two tries with Clayburgh also hitting the conversions. Norwich kept the momentum rolling as the Wildcats struggled to mount any offense leading to a 54-0 Cadet win. Other scorers included: Marius Edwards (Unity, N.H.), Logan Perry, two from Marcus Inthavixay, Greydon Bleau, and Ben Steen (Sandwich, Mass.).

In game two of the day, Norwich kept rolling against New England College with a 63-0 victory. Clayburgh had a monster game leading the pack with four converted tries. He was one of four players with converted tries to his name.

Clayburgh kept his dominant tournament performance rolling by scoring less than a minute into the third matchup of the day against Keene State and would add two more later on. Both Logan Perry, Michel St. Juste (Atlantic City, N.J.) and Edwards would also add offensive contribution as the Cadets clipped the Owls 41-0.

In game four against Connecticut College, seven different Cadets notched a try in another shutout, this one by a score of 62-0.  This performance was immediately followed up with a 38-0 shutout of Massachusetts Maritime where St. Juste scored three tries in the second half.

In the tournament championship game, Norwich took on the University of New Hampshire's A-Team. The Wildcats scored early to break the Cadets' shutout streak. But the Cadets quickly responded on the ensuing kickoff with a strong run on the outside with Logan Perry scoring, and Leo Clayburgh converting. As the first half wound down, New Hampshire scored again taking a 10-7 into halftime. Out of the break, Clayburgh tallied a converted try, giving Norwich a 14-10. Not long after, the Wildcats converted another try in this back-and-forth tilt. But eventually, Norwich took the upper hand with strong runs by Inthavixay and Edwards to go ahead 26-17 for good.

Up next in sevens competition for the Cadets are the New England Wide Collegiate Rugby (NEWCRC) Sevens Championships in Springfield, Mass on April 15.
