NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University Wrestling team closed out their dual meet schedule with Senior Day at Andrew Gym with a 30-13 defeat at the hands of Southern Maine Saturday afternoon.
The Huskies jumped out to an early advantage with wins in the first six matches getting a 24-0 advantage. The Cadets got on the board with a pin from sophomore
James Spellman (Norwood, Mass.) in the 174-pound matchup, which was followed by a major decision in favor of
Simon Taraska (Willowick, Ohio).
Southern Maine picked up another victory, however in a heavyweight bout
Mason Sprinkel (Bel Air, Md.) defeated Jake Peavey by decision. Coming into the action Peavey was the second ranked combatant in the 285-pound class in the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) and eighth in the country.
"We are happy with our conditioning, effort, and fortitude. We took risks and wrestled to the whistle, unfortunately, we came up short," said Head Coach Alex Whitney. "James, Simon, and Mason are making leaps at the right time of year. Mason's come from behind win over Peavey should earn him a decent seed going into regionals."
Next up for Norwich is the NEWA Futures Tournament, which commences at 11 AM on Feb. 19 in Springfield, Mass.
