Men's Rugby: Cadets compete at UNH Milley 7s Tournament

DURHAM, N.H. – The Norwich University men's rugby team had a strong showing at the Scott Milley 7s Tournament, hosted by the University of New Hampshire on Sunday. 

The A-side went 2-3, falling in the Plate final to UConn 24-19. The B side went 3-1, falling in the B-side semifinals to UMass 29-19. 

Norwich went 1-1 in pool play, beating Hartford 26-0 and falling 26-12 to New England College in its second game. The Cadets then lost 33-22 to American International College (AIC) in the quarterfinal round. 

NU beat Westfield State 34-0 in the Plate semifinals, before falling to UConn to finish sixth overall in the tournament. 

Anthony Candrilli, Eric Pierone, Jay Inzenga and Nate Rolling each scored three tries to lead the A-side offense. Keyon McCloud-Holman notched two tries, while Levi Dyson, Pasquale Cassese, Austin Manhey, Eli Henderson and Korbin Wayton each had a try as well to round out the Norwich offense. 

Keegan Frick had four conversions, while Candrilli had two conversions and Cassese had one. 

The B-side went 2-0 in Pool Play with a 31-0 win over Hartford and a 21-10 victory over New England College. The Cadets then squeaked out a 31-26 win over UMass-Lowell, before falling 29-19 to UMass in the B-semifinals. 

Adam Schmitz led the B-side with three tries on the day. Levi Dyson, Matt Ulufanua, Ryan Wagner, Alejandro Galea and Jacob McMullen each had two tries. Andrew Pitcher, Jacob Dennis, Taualupe Tau each had on try. 

Tau had seven conversions while Pitcher had five and Blair Woodley had one. 

In total, Norwich scored 35 tries from 18 different players with all 25 players getting playing time. NU had 20 conversions from five different kickers. 

"Both sides played with a lot of heart and grit," said NU head coach Bob Weggler. "It was a great day for Norwich 7s." 

Norwich has two 15s Development side matches Keene State on Wednesday, April 12 and Wednesday, April 19 vs. Bridgton Academy. 

The 7s side will compete again on April 23 at the NECRC 7s Tournament hosted by the Univ. of Rhode Island. Norwich is now 4-7 on the season in A side 7s action.
