NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Norwich defeated Coast Guard
Academy 26- 10, maintaining its 2nd seed in the Div. II
New England Rugby Football Union. It was a highly contested match
with both teams knowing that only the winner advances.
Norwich scored the only try of the half. Coast Guard had an
excellent opportunity to score near five meter line at the end of
the half but Norwich defense held. The first half ended,
Norwich 5- Coast Guard 0.
Norwich scored back to back converted tries at the fifty second
and fifty eight minute to give them a 19-0 lead. Coast Guard got on
the scoreboard with an unconverted try from their forward play to
bring the score to Norwich 19- Coast Guard 5. Norwich quickly
answers with a converted try at the seventy- second minute, Norwich
26- Coast Guard 5. In injury time Coast adds another unconverted
try. The final whistle blew to the delight of the home crowd,
Norwich 26- Coast Guard 10.
“This was a hard fought battle right from the opening
kickoff”, said Coach Weggler. “It was an intense
atmosphere with both teams having to win to advance to NRU
Playoffs. The Norwich boys played with exceptional grit and heart
today, we are so proud of their effort”, he added.
The second side also won in a full eighty minute match 36-17.
Both Norwich's 1st and 2nd sides have
won six straight matches.
The Norwich Men Rugby Cadets ranked 2nd in
New England, 13th nationally, will host a
Northeast Rugby Union playoff match next weekend, day and tine
TBA.
