Men's Lacrosse: Forbes, Fleury lead offensive push in non-conference setback to Trinity

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University men's lacrosse team reached the midway point of its five-game homestand on Wednesday evening, battling Trinity College in a 20-7 non-conference setback to the Bantams on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium.

Jackson Forbes (Merrimack, N.H.) and Drew Fleury (Nashua, N.H.) paced the Cadet attack with two goals apiece, while James Raymond (Tracy's Landing, Md.) and Jake Marcotte (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) each contributed a goal and an assist for two-point performances.

Case MacDonald (Burke, Va.) added a late tally, and Nicholas Wolfgang (New Port Richey, Fla.) chipped in an assist as Norwich generated offense in key stretches throughout the contest.

Trinity established early control, building a 4-0 advantage within the opening nine minutes.  Norwich quickly responded to halt the surge, as Forbes converted just 12 seconds after the Bantams' fourth goal to put the Cadets on the board.  The visitors answered with a pair of tallies to extend the margin, but Forbes struck again, finishing a feed from Raymond to trim the deficit to 6-2 before Trinity added another goal late in the opening frame.

The Bantams continued to pressure offensively in the second quarter, scoring three times in the first 10 minutes.  Fleury ended the run with a finish at the 4:07 mark, though Trinity answered with two more scores to maintain momentum.  Norwich generated a spark in the closing seconds of the half, as Marcotte set up Raymond with just 13 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 12-4 heading into the break.

Both sides traded goals early in the second half, with Fleury recording his second tally of the evening to answer a Trinity strike.  However, the Bantams regained control with a decisive six-goal run that stretched into the fourth quarter.

Marcotte finally halted the surge, converting off a Wolfgang assist as Norwich pushed back late.  The Cadets outscored Trinity 2-1 over the final 10-and-a-half minutes, capped by an unassisted goal from MacDonald with five minutes remaining.

Norwich showed resilience in transition, finishing with 17 successful clear attempts, including a strong 10-for-11 effort in the second half.  The Cadets also collected 24 ground balls, highlighted by five from goalkeeper Mason Dils (Watervliet, N.Y.), who battled constant pressure throughout the contest.

At the face-off stripe, Norwich secured 12 victories.  Mark Chu (Amston, Conn.) led the group with six wins, while Ryan Magararu (Newtonville, Mass.) added five.

The Cadets will continue their homestand on Saturday, Mar. 21, hosting Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium for Senior Day.  Prior to gametime, Norwich will honor Drew Fleury, Robert Carr (Amsterdam, N.Y.), Parker Fleury (Nashua, N.H.), and Alex Johnston (Franklin, Tenn.) for their contributions to Norwich men's lacrosse.
