CASTLETON, Vt.- The Norwich Baseball team traveled through the Green Mountains to have their first contest against Vermont State Castleton since 2017, Thursday afternoon, which the Spartans took in an abbreviated game.
Castleton jumped ahead, pushing a run across both the second and third innings. The Cadets responded in the top of the fifth to take the lead.
Isaac Maldonado (Miami, Fla.) drew a lead-off walk, while
Michael Davide Jr. (Franklin, Mass.) followed by lacing a double to left field. This put runners on second and third with no outs for
Geffen Franus (Leesburg, Va.), who brought everyone home with a three-run homer to put Norwich ahead. Later in the inning,
Michael Sabasteanski (Ashburn, Va.) notched a base hit before coming across on an RBI double by
Jakob Hayes (Arlington, Texas).
In the home half of the fifth, the Spartans scored four runs of their own to take a two-run lead. Upon conclusion of the fifth inning, the game was called due to wet field conditions in addition to waning daylight. Five different Cadets tallied hits, with Franus and Hayes combining for the four RBI.
Norwich will return to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play Tuesday afternoon when they travel to Dean to keep their postseason aspirations alive.
