NORTHFIELD, Vt.- In their second contest in as many days, the Norwich Baseball team returned to their home diamond to take on Vermont State Lyndon for the third time this season, Wednesday afternoon. The Cadets would ride two long innings in the fourth and sixth to secure the win.
After Norwich kept the Hornets off the scoreboard in the first, they would open the scoring in the home half.
Alex DeTomasis (East Greenwich, R.I.) led things off with a walk, preceding back-to-back base knocks by
John O'Connor (Southington, Conn.) and
Ryan Miller (Westhampton, N.Y.). DeTomasis came home on the first of six Lyndon wild pitches, while O'Connor crossed the plate thanks to a
Trevor Lussier (Lyndonville, Vt.) sacrifice fly. The Cadets added one more in the second with
Eli Oliver (East Montpelier, Vt.) plating
Kevin Ohlsen (Shirley, N.Y.) with an RBI single.
In the third, the Hornets took the lead by scoring six runs, which the maroon and gold answered with six of their own in the fourth. With one out, DeTomasis started things off with a single, before a hit by pitch, wild pitch, and a free pass loaded the bases. A second hit by pitch to Miller brought home DeTomasis, before a Lussier walk brought home Oliver. After a pitching change, O'Connor came home on a passed ball before another free pass to
Baker Stewart (Leesburg, Va.). With the bases loaded and two out,
Jakob Hayes (Arlington, Texas) shot the left center field gap, clearing the bases, regaining the lead for the Cadets.
Lyndon cut into the Norwich advantage in the top of the sixth, but the Cadets answered with a seven-spot in the bottom of the frame. Miller opened things up with a free pass and a stolen base before coming home on an RBI single by Stewart. After advancing on a ground out, Stewart stole third before eventually coming home on another wild pitch. Three consecutive free passes scored another one and kept the bases loaded. After a pitching change, O'Connor dealt the knockout blow by sending a ball over the left field fence for a grand slam, the first of his career, rounding out the inning.
On the mound,
Carson Rath (Glens Falls, N.Y.) held the Hornets down, allowing one run in four and a third innings while striking out six with no walks, earning his first victory of the campaign.
David Cooper (Stockton, N.J.) finished the contest with two strikeouts in the final two innings. At the plate, several Cadets made an impact, including DeTomasis (2-2, 3 Runs, 3 Walks), O'Connor (2-4, 3 Runs, 4 RBI, Grand Slam), Miller (2-4, 2 Runs), Stewart (2-3, 2 Runs, 3 Walks), and Hayes (1-3, 3 RBI).
Norwich will resume Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play when they travel to Saint Joseph's College of Maine over the weekend. The twin bill is currently slated for a 1 PM start on April 5.
