NORTHFIELD, Vt.- The Norwich Baseball team returned to their home diamond Thursday afternoon for a doubleheader with Albertus Magnus, where the Falcons would emerge with a sweep.
Albertus drew first blood in the third inning with a solo home run over the left field scoreboard, but the Cadets answered by taking the lead in the fourth, pushing across four runs. With two down,
Brock Carpenter (East Berlin, Pa.) drew a walk before an infield single by
Michael Sabasteanski (Ashburn, Va.) and a hit by pitch for
Dillian Garza (San Antonio, Texas), which loaded the bases. Carpenter and Sabasteanski came home on a two-RBI single to the left center field gap by
Jakob Hayes (Arlington, Texas). After a Falcon pitching change,
Isaac Maldonado (Miami, Fla.) shot the right center field gap to score Garza and Hayes on a two-run double.
The Falcons answered in the fifth with six and two more in the seventh to seal a victory in the opener. For Norwich, Maldonado (2-5, 2 RBI) and Sabasteanski (2-4, Run) tallied multiple hits, with Hayes recording 2 RBIs.
Continuing their momentum from the opening contest, the Falcons opened a seven-run lead by the end of the third inning. The Cadets ate into the lead in the fourth with
Kyle Tanis (Shelbourne, Vt.) singling home Carpenter, and added another run in the sixth with
Nolan Knight (Altona, N.Y.) coming home on a fielder's choice. Albertus plated four more runs in the seventh to finish the scoring.
At the plate, Tanis recorded both RBIs in the second game, with Knight going a perfect two for two. On the mound,
Peter Idleman (Mequon, Wis.) was solid in relief, shutting out the Falcons in three and two-thirds innings of work.
Norwich's brief homestand continues Sunday afternoon, April 13, when they host reigning Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Champion Mitchell at noon.
