FORT PIERCE, Fla.- On the penultimate day of their spring break trip through Florida, the Norwich Baseball team faced Wilkes in single-game action Thursday afternoon where the Colonels emerged victorious.
As the designated road team, the Cadets got ahead early in the top of the first. With two outs,
Brock Carpenter (East Berlin, Pa.) drew a free pass. The following hitter,
John O'Connor (Southington, Conn.) hit a single to right field, where Carpenter would come home on a throwing error to give Norwich the lead. Wilkes answered with three runs in the bottom of the first, putting them ahead for good.
Facing a six-run deficit in the eighth, the Cadets closed the gap. Back-to-back batters reached base with one out with a walk to
Kevin Ohlsen (Shirley, N.Y.) and a single for
Kyle Tanis (Shelburne, Vt.). After both runners moved over a station,
Trevor Lussier (Lyndonville, Vt.) brought them home with a two-RBI single to right field, shrinking the deficit to five.
On the mound,
Jordan Talbot (Belchertown, Mass.) was solid in his start, striking out five batters in four innings of work, and allowed only one earned run.Â
Norwich will close out their trip to the Sunshine State with a twin bill on March 7 against Capital at 1 PM in Vero Beach.
