FORT PIERCE, Fla.- The day after a season-opening sweep, the Norwich Baseball team returned to the diamond in Florida to take on Alvernia in doubleheader action where the Wolves would take home the sweep.
The Cadets got off to a fast start in the opener, starting with a leadoff homer by
Isaac Maldonado (Miami, Fla.). The next two batters reached base on back-to-back singles by
Brock Carpenter (East Berlin, Pa.) and
Geffen Franus (Leesburg, Va.). Two batters later,
Ryan Miller (Westhampton, N.Y.) brought home Carpenter with an RBI single for an early two-run lead. Alvernia answered by cutting the lead in half in the bottom half of the inning before jumping ahead for good with a seven-run second inning and would not look back.
The Wolves jumped out to an early lead in game two, but Norwich answered in the home half of the third. Singles by Maldonado and
John O'Connor (Southington, Conn.) gave way to a two-RBI double by Miller to even the score. Alvernia retook the lead in the fifth and extended it in the seventh to 7-2.
Looking to mount a rally, Carpenter reached base on an error, soon followed by a single by
Trevor Lussier (Lyndonville, Vt.). After the two runners advanced on a wild pitch,
Dillan Garza (San Antonio, Texas) took first on a walk to load the bases with one out. Maldonado drove in Carpenter with a sacrifice fly, before Franus singled home Lussier bringing the tying run to the plate. But the Wolves wiggled out of trouble and preserved the 7-4 win.
The Cadets will return to action on March 4 when they play Elizabethtown in doubleheader action as their Florida trip rolls on.
