Women's Basketball: McGinn moves into top 10 all-time in scoring, Cadets blitzed by Wildcats' three-point storm

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Despite an early strong effort, the Norwich University women's basketball team could not fight back a fiery three-point blitz, falling to JWU (Providence), 98-53, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) battle in Andrews Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

A pair of Cadets netted double-digits on the day, as Haley Brewster (Virginia Beach, Va.) drilled four shots from beyond the arc to finish with 14 points while Maren McGinn (Georgia, Vt.) added a near double-double of 11 points and nine rebounds.  Mallorie Chalmers (Milton, Vt.) provided eight points off the bench.

After a swift jumper off the bat gave the Wildcats the initial edge, McGinn responded off a fastbreak layup, putting Norwich on the board and knotting the affair at 2-all.  Back-to-back treys by JWU supplied momentum to the visitors, but the Cadets remained close, with Brewster and Kiley O'Brien (Kingston, Mass.) knocking down consecutive jumpers to trim the Wildcat lead to 8-6.

JWU's offense exploded to end the frame, surging ahead to a 15-point advantage before extending the lead to as large as 33 in the second stanza.  The Cadets seized momentum out of halftime, embarking on an 8-0 spurt off buckets from Brewster and Siobhan O'Donnell (Queens, N.Y.), but the Wildcats reclaimed momentum.

The fourth quarter yielded similar results, as JWU's lead ballooned to 53 points before Norwich closed the day with eight-straight points to whittle the Wildcats' final margin of victory down to 45, 98-53.

The Cadets maintained a narrow 6-5 advantage in second-chance points, while shooting 78.6% (11-14) from the foul line.

The Wildcats were paced by Isabella Suero's 34 points on 10-made three-pointers, as well as Grace Jaffray's 32-point performance.

McGinn's 11-point showcase pushed her point total to 1,164 points over her storied four-year career, which now cements her within the top-10 all-time scorers in Norwich University women's basketball history.  She surpassed Hilary Livingston's 1159-point mark, and now sits 20 points shy of surpassing Tina Griffiths for ninth-place.

Norwich will look to rebound on Wednesday, Feb. 12, hosting New England College at 7:00 p.m. within the friendly confines of Andrews Gymnasium.  The Cadets then travel to close the week at Lasell University on Saturday, Feb. 15.
