Women's Volleyball: Lawing, Davie pace Cadets in home setback to Chargers

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University women's volleyball team resumed Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Tuesday afternoon, falling in straight sets to visiting Colby-Sawyer College (13-25, 10-25, 17-25) in Andrews Hall.

The Cadets showed flashes of resilience throughout the match, led offensively by Taylor 'Rae' Lawing (Allen, Texas), who posted a team-high five kills.  Grace Davie (Lynnfield, Mass.) added four kills and a team-best eight digs, while Sarah DeBot (Rochester, N.Y.) handed out six assists.  Charlotte Johnson (Moultonborough, N.H.) anchored the defensive front with a game-high two blocks.

Norwich opened the match with early momentum, capitalizing on a Charger attack error to take the opening point.  The Cadets continued to press, riding a 4-1 run sparked by an Elexis Powell (Charlott Hall, Md.) kill from Autumn Parkhurst (Parish, N.Y.) to establish a 5-2 edge.  Colby-Sawyer responded to take its first lead, but the Cadets remained close, tying the score at 11-all.  A subsequent 7-0 surge by the Chargers, however, proved decisive in the opening frame.

The second set tilted heavily in Colby-Sawyer's favor early, as the Chargers surged to a 21-5 lead.  Norwich found its footing in the final stretch, outscoring Colby-Sawyer, 5-3, across the next eight possessions, but a service error handed the visitors the second set.

The third stanza proved to be the most competitive of the match.  Norwich kept pace early, then used a 7-2 run to take an 11-8 lead.  The Chargers answered, but the Cadets stayed within striking distance, notching several one-point leads and drawing even at 16-16.  A final push by Colby-Sawyer closed out the frame and sealed the match.

Norwich will return to the road on Saturday, Oct. 25, for a GNAC tri-match at Simmons University in Boston, Mass.  The Cadets will face the host Sharks at 10:00 a.m., followed by a noon matchup with Albertus Magnus College.  The road swing continues on Wednesday, Oct. 29, with a non-conference tilt at Lesley University.
