NEW LONDON, Conn.- After a brief homestand, the Norwich Men's Soccer team hit the road to take on Mitchell to continue Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play against Mitchell Saturday afternoon, where
Diego Fuentes (Valencia, Spain) drove the Cadets to two second-half goals to secure the win.
Off the opening kick, Norwich held the upper hand, forcing Mariner goalkeeper Jesse Jenkins to make several stops on
Alessandro D'Arena (Berlin, Conn.) and
Cameron Albrecht (Albuquerque, N.M.). After two corners and two more shot attempts, Mitchell answered by forcing
Kirk Rodgers (Lebanon, Ohio) to make several stops. The two sides traded possessions late in the half, but the contest remained scoreless at the break.
In the 58
th minute, the Mariners broke the ice off a turnover with Jose Pacheco cashing in. Soon after, the Cadets answered. On a free kick just outside the box, Fuentes dribbled the ball to the right side, where
Gabriel Cantarero (Annapolis, Md.) redirected the ball into the bottom right corner to even the score in the 62
nd minute.
After tying the game, Norwich kept up the pressure, looking to take the lead. After several chances misfired, Fuentes broke the tie in the 85
th minute on a direct kick. The Cadets kept up the pressure, keeping Mitchell on the defensive to preserve the win with Fuentes notching a goal and an assist.
The Cadets will continue their brief road trip in GNAC play when they visit Regis on Oct. 25 for a 2:00 p.m. kickoff in their penultimate contest of the regular season.
