Women's Basketball: McGinn posts dominant double-double, Cadets fall to second-half Raider charge

NASHUA, N.H. - The Norwich University women's basketball team could not break open a third-quarter deadlock, dropping a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) affair at Rivier University, 64-45, at the Muldoon Center on Wednesday evening.

Maren McGinn (Georgia, Vt.) was the lone Cadet to net double-figures, posting a monster 29-point and 11-rebound double-double on 13-18 shooting while knocking down a pair of treys.  Kiley O'Brien (Kingston, Mass.) was next up in the offensive scorebook, tallying seven points and 12 caroms.

Hannah Muchemore opened up the contest for the Raiders by draining a trey on the first possession, before O'Brien kicked off Norwich's offense a minute later on a jumper.  Both teams exchanged baskets as the Cadets remained close, whittling down an early seven-point Rivier lead on a 4-0 spurt by McGinn and O'Brien.

The Raiders surged to capture a double-digit lead heading into the second quarter, which was gradually trimmed by Norwich late in the frame.  Another seven-point Rivier advantage was quickly evaporated in a 38-second span off back-to-back buckets from McGinn, before a Muchemore layup gave Rivier a four-point lead at halftime.

An offensive struggle throughout the third quarter appeared to go Norwich's way, as Haley Brewster (Virginia Beach, Va.) knotted the contest at 32-all with 4:41 left.  It was not to be, however, as the Raiders embarked on a 15-4 run to end the quarter and reclaim an 11-point edge.

Rivier's lead ballooned in the final stanza, as the Raiders held the Cadets to two points for the opening six minutes while building their lead to as large as 24.  A personal 5-0 run by McGinn in the closing minutes gave Norwich momentum, but the clock ran short on any comeback berth.

The Cadet defense held Rivier to woeful shooting percentages, including 29.6% from the floor and 17.9% from beyond the arc.

Lyric Grumblatt, the leading scorer in the GNAC, was held a point below her average, logging a 25-point and 10-rebound double-double to lead Rivier.

Norwich will look to snap its four-game losing streak on Saturday, Jan. 18, hosting conference rival Emmanuel College at 3:00 p.m. in Andrews Hall.  The Cadets then close their two-game home-stand on Tuesday, Jan. 21, against Regis College.
