NORTHFIELD, Vt.- To round out a soccer doubleheader on Sabine Field, the Norwich Men's Soccer team returned home Saturday evening to take on Mitchell as they returned to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play.
Off the opening kick, the Cadets held a decided territorial advantage, and had several chances that missed the mark. Just as the first half was set to expire, Norwich found a spark. Off a Mariners' foul,
Jeremy Pless (Titusville, Fla.) sent a free kick into the box, leading to the ball pinballing around off
Christian Grubic (Montvale, N.J.) and
Kyle Dunn (Las Vegas, Nev.) before coming to the left foot of
Ben Rubinstein (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.). Rubinstein sent the ball to the bottom right corner from eight yards out with six tenths of a second left on the clock for his first collegiate goal, giving the Cadets the lead in a half they dominated, and drew ten fouls.
With that momentum coming out of the break, Norwich would continue to push the attack, and eventually go ahead by two in the 55
th minute. Pless would send a corner kick into the box. Amid the chaos, the ball would hit off
Oleksandr Kharchuk's (Ukraine) leg and hit a Mitchell defender who was standing behind the goal line making the goal count and pushing the Cadet lead to two. After several other chances for Norwich,
Cooper Hurley (Northfield, Vt.) would win possession in the attacking midfield and pass it off to Dunn. Dunn got the ball to the 30-yard mark before sending the ball on goal. A shot that bounced off the keeper's hands and into the goal, giving Hurley his first collegiate point, as well as a three-goal advantage for the maroon and gold who would seal the deal.
Up next for Norwich, they will hit the road to take on archrival Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Oct. 1 at 5 PM.
