PROVIDENCE, R.I.- Rounding out their season opening road trip, the Norwich Men's Soccer team travelled down to Johnson & Wales (JWU) Wednesday night in a rematch of last season's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship game.
After two early corners by the Wildcats, the Cadets pressed the other way, using speed and tempo on offense to catch JWU off guard. Norwich kept up the pressure with four shot attempts, two shots on goal by
Diego Fuentes (Valencia, Spain) and
Christian Grubic (Montvale, N.J.), along with a corner but they were turned away on the doorstep. Soon after, in the 32
nd minute, a Connor Elliott corner found Aidan Bagley by the back post for the eventual game winning tally. Â Both teams battled back-and-forth, but the one goal JWU lead remained at the half.
Early in the second half,
Kirk Rodgers (Lebanon, Ohio) came up big with two of his four saves to keep the deficit at one. As the half wore on, the Cadets amped up the offense in search of the equalizer, including an
Aidan Dwyer (Glastonbury, Conn.) chance that was turned aside. Three straight corner kicks yielded no results, as the Wildcats protected their crease to seal the 1-0 victory.
Norwich will open its home schedule on Saturday afternoon Sept. 14 when they host Emmanuel at 1 PM.
