BABSON PARK, Mass. - The Norwich University women's basketball team saw their four-game winning streak come to a halt in an 88-38 loss to Babson College in a non-conference bout at Staake Gymnasium on Monday evening.
Haley Brewster (Virginia Beach, Va.) was the lone Cadet in double-figures, knocking down a pair of treys en route to finishing with 14 points.Â
Kiley O'Brien (Kingston, Mass.) was the next Cadet in the box score offensively, contributing seven points.
Norwich came out of the gates firing after the Beavers took a quick 3-0 lead just 22 seconds in, claiming a 4-3 advantage on back-to-back baskets by Brewster and O'Brien. The Babson onslaught ensued fast, however, as the hosts rattled off nine straight points to reclaim control.
A pair of Brewster freebies brought the lead back down to six, 12-6, and the Cadets remained within single digits after a
Lily Briggs (Fair Haven, Vt.) jumper kept it at nine halfway through the opening stanza. It was not to be, with Babson embarking on a 10-0 run to end the frame.
The Cadets attempted to whittle the Beavers' advantage down on buckets from Brewster and
Sage MacAuley (Barre, Vt.), but stellar outside shooting from the Beavers aided the hosts in building a lead that grew to as large as 31 before halftime.
Norwich kept Babson within that same window throughout the third quarter, but the Beavers' offense erupted in the final 10 minutes to capture the 50-point victory.
The Cadets will look to rebound on Friday, Dec. 6, opening the 2024 Ed Hockenbury Classic in Andrews Gym with a 5:00 p.m. bout against Wellesley College. The field also includes Keene State College and Middlebury College, with the Owls and Panthers meeting one another at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night. The losers will subsequently battle in the Hockenbury Classic's consolation tilt on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 12:30 p.m., while the winners will duel in the championship game scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
