NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University rifle team shot in the friendly confines of Baroffio's Rifle Range for the first time against another team this season, defeating John Jay College, 4348-4266, on Saturday in the Cadets' home opener.
Norwich's 4348 aggregate tally included an impressive 2138 mark in smallbore, outdoing the Bloodhounds' 2053 score. That proved to be the difference, as John Jay just narrowly topped the Cadets in air rifle competition, 2213-2210.
Sophia Ashford (Northfield, Vt.) continued her remarkable freshman season, finishing second overall and first among Norwich shooters on a 1112 aggregate, posting scores of 546 in smallbore and 566 in air rifle action.
Aiden Burris (Marietta, Ga.) and
Ben Kelley (Niantic, Conn.) trailed Ashford, coming in third and fourth overall on 1098 and 1071 aggregate scores, respectively.
The remaining Cadet shooters took to the range in either smallbore or air rifle competition, as
Sage Kontny (Clancy, Mont.) was the next highest-scorer with a 551 effort in air rifle.
