NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Norwich University women's volleyball team endured a 3-0 loss (16-25, 12-25, 20-25) in a midweek Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) duel at Colby-Sawyer College in the Hogan Sports Center on Wednesday evening.
Both teams traded leads and ties throughout the opening half of the first set, with the Cadets maintaining a 12-11 lead after back-to-back kills from
Giovanna Fruci (Wrentham, Mass.) and
Lillie Ells (Centerville, Mass.) off assists from
Ava Nihill (Marshfield, Mass.). The Chargers rammed forward, however, taking the edge on nine-straight points to assume control of the initial stanza. Despite three points in a row from the Cadets, Colby-Sawyer held on.
The second set played out similarly, as Norwich remained close, trailing by just one, 13-12, at one point before the Chargers again embarked on another dominant run to conclude the frame.
The Cadets enjoyed their best success in the third, withholding an assortment of Colby-Sawyer runs and maintaining a 20-all deadlock heading into the final stretch. It was not to be, however, as the Chargers claimed victory.
Ells paced the team in kills, racking up five, while
Katie Finn (Peru, N.Y.) owned two service aces.Â
Bella Belldina Ray (Martinsburg, W.Va.) logged three blocks, Nihill handed out 11 helpers, and Ells tied the game-high in digs with 12.
Norwich continues its collection of away games with back-to-back road tilts on Saturday, Oct. 26, first traveling to Trinity College (Conn.) in Hartford, Conn., for an 11:30 a.m. tilt. The Cadets will then head to Mitchell College in New London, Conn., the same day for a 4:00 p.m. GNAC showdown.
