NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University women's basketball team could not weather a late storm in a Wednesday night Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) showdown, falling to Colby-Sawyer College, 58-52, in Andrews Hall.
The Cadets were paced by a double-double effort from
Maren McGinn (Georgia, Vt.), who posted 14 points and 10 caroms.Â
Haley Brewster (Virginia Beach, Va.) tallied 13 points, while
Sage MacAuley (Barre, Vt.) added 11 points.
Brewster kicked off the affair with a trey on Norwich's opening possession, in a back-and-forth first quarter that as knotted up before the break on a Colby-Sawyer bomb.
Norwich found life in the second frame, turning a one-point deficit into a 12-point edge behind a 17-4 run, which included seven-straight points down the stretch from
Siobhan O'Donnell (Glendale, N.Y.) and McGinn.
The Cadets continued to roll in the third, taking their largest lead of 19 halfway through the stanza on a McGinn jumper. But Colby-Sawyer began to find steam, rallying to dwindle Norwich's lead down to 10 entering the final quarter.
Norwich extended the lead back to 12 off a McGinn layup to open the final 10 minutes, but the Chargers mounted a vicious comeback, reclaiming the lead with 3:41 remaining behind a barrage of treys and never relinquishing it.
The hosts held edges in points in the paint (26-18) and second-chance points (6-3).
The Cadets will hit the road for a Saturday duel at Albertus Magnus College, with tip-off scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at New Haven, Conn. Norwich then returns home for a pair of tilts, taking on Elms College on Jan. 30 and Southern Maine Community College on Feb. 1.
