WESTON, Mass.- For the first time this season, the Norwich Men's Soccer team came away with a win after defeating Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe 2-0 in a Wednesday matinee in Weston.
Both sides traded opportunities early on, but in the 17
th minute the Cadets caught the Pride in a counterattack with
Jami Lashua (Williston, Vt.) breaking down the right side where he would send it to a breaking
Kam Jorgenson (Titusville, Fla.) who settled it down and sent a ball to the top left corner off his right foot to put Norwich ahead early. They would keep pressing the attack, eventually Lashua would create another opportunity where he was taken down drawing a penalty kick in the 25
th minute. Taking the penalty was
Nathan Statires (Hampton, N.H.), who would send his shot passed the outstretched goalkeepers arms to the back of the net to put the Cadets up by two.
With a fit of desperation, Regis attempted to come back in the second half, but they were repeatedly turned away by
Nicolas Lanza (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) who made all four of his saves in the second half to seal the deal and earn Head Coach
Staige Davis his first career win. Â Â
"It's great to finally get three points on the board," said Davis. "I think we've been unlucky at points this season, but the players have stayed positive and continue to work hard. Today's result was well earned by everyone and hopefully it can push us moving forward."
With their first win in hand, Norwich will look to keep up their momentum when they travel to Rivier on Saturday afternoon with a 3 PM start.
