WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Norwich University falls to the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), dropping a double header, to begin Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play. Although the first game this season against a GNAC opponent, the result does not count in the divisional standings. The two schools play in opposite divisions with Norwich in the North and USJ in the South. Originally, the game was scheduled to be played in Northfield, but weather forced the game to be moved to the USJ campus. Even with the change in venue, the Cadets were still technically the home team.
In the first game of the doubleheader, USJ was led by a dominant pitching performance that never allowed the Cadets' offense to get rolling. Blue Jays sophomore Alyssa Roberts threw a complete game, only allowing 3 hits while striking out 10, in the 0-12 opener of the doubleheader. The Cadets saw USJ bats come alive early as the Blue Jays erupted for eight runs in the top of the first inning. The early lead was too much to overcome for the Cadets.
The second game was equally frustrating for the Cadets. After two innings, the score was 0-4 in favor of the Blue Jays but the Cadets looked like a much different team. Unfortunately, Cadet errors eventually led to the next eight runs all being unearned, as the Blue Jays built a 12 run lead going into the bottom of the final inning. The Cadets made an offensive push late, but the lead was too much, and the Cadets could not complete the comeback.
Charlotte Charbonneau (West Springfield, Mass.) led the offense going 2-for-3 with 2 RBI in the second game.
Maren McGinn (Georgia, Vt.) was 1-for-2 with a run and RBI,
Taylor Farnsworth was 1-for-1 with a run scored, and
Laura Deaton (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Norwich had some opportunities throughout the game, but seven runners left on base and the four errors which led to eight unearned runs, were too much to overcome in the game.
The Cadets are back in action quickly as they travel to New Hampshire for a Monday double header against Rivier University.
