CASTINE, Maine - The Norwich University women's basketball team found success in the second half but could not overcome a sluggish first stanza in a 92-55 loss at the Maine Maritime Academy on Sunday afternoon.
Haley Brewster (Virginia Beach, Va.) led all scorers, pouring in 29 points while going 7-8 from the charity stripe in today's non-conference tilt.
Despite a swift 5-0 start by the Mariners, Norwich hung tough, with back-to-back layups from
Maren McGinn (Georgia, Vt.) and
Rachel Botala (Grand Isle, Vt.) putting the Cadets on the board and cutting MMA's lead down to one. Subsequent attempts by the Mariners to widen the gap were thwarted immediately, as the Cadets succeeded in keeping their opposition within five on a pair of occasions.
Maine Maritime found some comfortable ground halfway through the opening frame, embarking on a 19-0 run to close out the first quarter before continuing to grow the lead in the second.
The Cadets found success offensively in the second half, being outscored by just six in the third stanza before tying Maine Maritime, 20-20, over the final 10 minutes.
MMA saw Erianna Moore log 21 points, while Lauren Plissey and Maria Barela posted 18 and 17, respectively.
Norwich will not return to the hardwood until Saturday, Feb. 11, for a 2:00 p.m. duel at Lasell University that will have seismic implications on the Cadets' chances for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) playoff bid.
