PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Norwich Men's Soccer team's incredible run through the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) playoffs came to a halt Saturday afternoon after falling to second seeded Johnson & Wales 2-0.
The Wildcats dominated possession all through out the first half, notching their first shot attempt two minutes in. JWU came close to breaking through early, but Conner Elliott's shot hit the post. Late in the half, the Cadets broke through in the shot column with a header off a free kick by
Kam Jorgenson (Titusville, Fla.). The first half would end soon after with
Nicolas Lanza (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) making two saves.
Soon after halftime, in the 64
th minute, the Wildcats would break the scoreless deadlock with Mike Hernandez heading a loose ball into the bottom left corner. Soon after, Norwich began pressing for a tie with a shot from
Aidan Dwyer (Glastonbury, Conn.) going wide, leading to a corner. Off the corner, taken by
Diego Fuentes (Valencia, Spain),
Cullen Swett (Williston, Vt.) had an opportunity that went off target. After that flurry, JWU would protect their lead by keeping the ball in their offensive end, leading to another Mike Hernandez goal in the 89
th minute.
"Unfortunately, today wasn't our day," Head Coach
Staige Davis said. "We came up against a very physical Johnson & Wales team on their home field and they managed the game well, congratulations to them. I am very proud of this team. They have incredible togetherness, toughness, and the desire to prove themselves as players and young men. I want to thank the players, coaches, and everyone involved with the program for making this season as successful as it was."
With the loss, the Cadets' 12 game unbeaten streak ends with Dwyer,
Kyle Dunn (Las Vegas, Nev.) and
Oleksandr Kharchuk (Ukraine) earning spots on the GNAC's All-Tournament team.
