QUINCY, Mass. - Powered by a second-half goal from
Isabel Doherty (Quincy, Mass.) in her hometown, the Norwich women's soccer team continued their hot start to the season with a 1-0 victory at Eastern Nazarene College in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at Veteran's Memorial Field.
Both teams were evenly matched in the opening 45 minutes, as Norwich edged the Lions in shots, 7-5, but neither team could break through their respective goals.
Kim Watt (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) logged three of her five saves in the first stanza, while Eastern Nazarene's Jasmine Arzu turned away six shots in the frame.
The Cadets broke through the scoreless deadlock just five minutes into the second half, as a pass from the 25-yard line from
Destiny Sanchez (Odessa, Fla.) tipped off the foot of
Lindsey Duggan (Belmont, N.H.) and into Arzu's territory. Despite Arzu's efforts to save the loose ball, Doherty was just a step faster, sliding in underneath Arzu and giving Norwich the go-ahead goal.
The Lions would muster two more shots on goal in the 72nd and 73rd minute, but Watt's stout defense and Norwich's subsequent dominance in keeping the ball out of their zone for the closing five minutes proved fatal for any potential comeback bid.
Norwich widened the gap in shots in the second half, finishing with a 20-9 edge for the game. 12 of those shots came on goal, with
Jillian Patria (Rindge, N.H.) tallying four of them.
The Cadets will take their 2-0 start to the season back to Northfield for a quick turnaround, hosting University of Maine-Farmington tomorrow, Sep. 4, in an early morning 11 a.m. tilt.
