NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich Cadets stymied a determined Regis (Mass.) attack during the first half, withstanding an early salvo of attacks and limiting the Pride to one goal on six shots and four corners. However, Regis broke through in the second half and handed Norwich a 5-1 setback on Friday afternoon at Sabine Field.
On the day, Norwich (2-3-1, 0-1-1) was outshot by Regis, 20-6. The Cadets' lone goal of the contest was scored in the 75th minute by senior Isabel Doherty (Quincy, Mass.) to cap off a fantastic end-to-end counter by Norwich. The play began with freshman Abby Kirrane (Lunnenberg, Mass.) who intercepted a deflected pass behind the midfield line and pushed the ball forward to fellow first year Bella Roy (Weare, N.H.).
A quick pass to Doherty spotted the ball roughly 30 yards out from goal, where the senior ripped a lofting shot over the goalkeeper and snuck the ball under the crossbar in the upper left corner of the net to cut the Regis lead in half. The tally was Doherty's second on the year.
The goal was one of four shots on goal taken by the Cadets during the contest, as Norwich was able to secure two corner kick attempts and drew eight fouls. Sophomore goalkeeper Rebecca Karis (Fayeteville, N.C.) stopped seven shots during the game, and pushed her season total on the year to 32 following a season-best 13-save performance against Castleton on Sept. 7 followed by a 10-save outing against St. Joseph (Conn.) on Sept. 14.
Freshman Abby Bruce (Peru, N.Y.) led the team with four shots on the day, including two on target, while Roy added a shot on goal of her own. Regis (3-2-1, 2-0-0) opened the scoring in the 11th minute and took a 2-0 lead four minutes into the second half before Doherty's goal cut the lead in half. The Pride ended the Cadets' comeback hopes with three goals over a six-minute span for the final total.
Norwich will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 20 for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) showdown against Elms. Kick-off is set for 4 p.m. from Sabine Field.
