Box Score WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Norwich University men's lacrosse team started the contest from behind, but was able to recover as they earned a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) win over St. Joseph (Conn.) Saturday afternoon at the USJ Lacrosse Field, 13-10.
Jack Anzalone (Ridgewood, N.J.) had three goals and a pair of assists as he totaled five points, and Payden Masaracchia (Enola, Pa.) had three goals in the matchup for a hat trick. Parker Campbell (Rockaway, N.J.) totaled three points while dishing out a pair of assists in a game that saw eight Cadets score.
Gavin Youngclaus (Middleboro, Mass.) forced three turnovers while picking up four ground balls in the win as Tommy Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.) made 18 saves.
St. Joseph took an early 2-0 lead 1:49 into the contest, before the Cadets answered with a goal from Callum Jones (Burlington, Ont.). A few minutes later Campbell scored to even things up at 2-2. Sebastian Fusco scored to put the Blue Jays ahead before a goal by Jack Haley (Falkville, Ala.) with 2:27 remaining in the first quarter knotted the game at 3-3 going into the second frame.
Youngclaus made his way onto the score sheet at the 9:44 mark of the second quarter leveling the score at 4-4 after another early second quarter Blue Jay goal. Trailing 5-4 with 5:12 remaining Anzalone scored a pair of goals over 54 seconds to give Norwich their first lead of the matchup, going into the half with a 6-5 advantage.
Coming out of the halftime break, Masaracchia continued made it three straight goals for the Cadets scoring with 11:23 on the clock in the third quarter. St. Joseph did not back down as they put together a pair of goals in six seconds to tie the contest at 7 each.
Tyler Seidel (Centreville, Md.) and Jake Andrews-Pestana (Napa, Calif.) combined for two goals as Norwich took a 9-7 lead before Ryan Paltauf closed out the third quarter scoring with a goal for the Blue Jays.
Anzalone put the Cadets up by two 58 seconds into the fourth quarter, but St. Joseph took a 10-8 lead with 14:02 remaining. The Blue Jays again cut the Cadet lead down to one as they traded goals back and forth. Leading 11-10 Masaracchia scored two goals, the first at 10:06 to ice the contest.
Norwich (8-1, 3-0 GNAC) hosts Dean on Wednesday, Apr. 6 at 4 pm before receiving a visit from Johnson & Wales on Saturday, Apr. 9 at 1 pm.
