Baseball: Cadets Split With Bulldogs, Walk-Off in Game Two

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University baseball team hosted Dean College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday at Garrity Field.

The Cadets and Bulldogs split the twin bill with Dean taking game one 9-5 and NU walking off in a 6-5 win in game two.

In game one, Norwich jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI groundout by senior catcher Connor McGee (Wakefield, R.I.).

The Bulldogs got their offense going with one run in the top of the second and five runs in the third to take a 6-1 lead.

NU rallied for two in the fourth as senior designated hitter Hayden Roberge (Middlesex, Vt.) scored on a wild pitch and sophomore third baseman Ryland Richardson (Windsor, Vt.) ripped an RBI single to left to cut the lead to 6-3.

Dean extended its lead to 9-3 in the top of the seventh before Norwich plated two in the bottom of the seventh for the 9-5 final. Sophomore center fielder Tyler Callahan (Arlington, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch and Richardson delivered his second RBI single of the day.

Roberge finished the game four-for-four with three doubles while Callahan logged a triple.

In game two, the Cadets took another early lead, this time a 4-0 lead after two innings. In the bottom of the second, freshman right fielder Nolan Knight (Altona, N.Y.) broke open a scoreless game with an RBI double to center for a 1-0 lead. Freshman catcher Tristan Carey (Crown Point, N.Y.) reached on an error that plated Richardson for a 2-0 lead before junior shortstop Nick Beavin (Montpelier, Vt.) drilled a two-run single to center for a 4-0 edge.

In the bottom of the third, Knight added his second run-scoring hit of the game, this time an RBI single to short to expand the lead to 5-0.

The Bulldogs plated five runs in their half of the fifth to knot the game, it would remain tied until the bottom of the seventh inning.

In the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded, freshman infielder Brock Carpenter (East Berlin, Penn.) stepped to the plate and sent a pitch right back up the middle over the second base bag for the walk-off single. Carpenter finished the game with two hits.

Beavin came into the game in relief in the top of the seventh and allowed one walk and no hits to pick up the win and move to 1-2 on the season.

The Cadets now stand at 12-11 overall and 3-7 in conference play while the Bulldogs move to 6-15 and 3-4. NU is next in action on Saturday, April 16th for a home, conference doubleheader against Albertus Magnus. Game times are set for 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
