Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University women's basketball team battled into the fourth quarter but were unable to overcome Elms, falling 68-58 to the Blazers in Andrews Hall on Tuesday evening in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tilt.
The Cadets' three-game winning streak was snapped in the loss to the Blazers.
Haley Brewster (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored 17 points in the matchup while pulling in a team-high nine rebounds. Skylar Burzynski (Orange, Conn.) had eight points and two steals while not turning the ball over in the contest. Hannah Stitely (Westminster, Md.) and MacKenzie Moore (Georgia, Vt.) added seven points each.
After Aiyanalee Lopez created a four-point lead for the Blazers by knocking down a three-pointer, Burzynski and Brewster combined for four points to even things up at 10. The Blazers would retake the lead coming out of the first frame with an 18-13 advantage.
Norwich would even things up at the half, outscoring the Blazers by a similar 18-13 margin in the second quarter to go into the halftime break knotted up at 31.
Norwich took a four-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter, but the Blazers were able to even the score with 5:52 remaining in regulation, while on a 10-point scoring run to take the lead. Elms did not look back as they were able to continue building upon the lead on their way to the victory.
Norwich (7-8, 5-3 GNAC) will visit the Chargers of Colby-Sawyer on Thursday, Feb. 3 at 5:30 pm. Norwich will then host Saint Joseph's College in the second game of the Cadets' basketball double-header in Andrews Hall on Saturday, Feb. 5, before preparing to visit Maine to take on the Monks Monday, Feb. 7.
