KEENE, N.H. - The Norwich men's swimming & diving team continued its undefeated start to the season, claiming a 214-77 win at Keene State College, while the women's swimming & diving team suffered a 176-114 setback to the Owls at Keene State's pool on Saturday afternoon.
The Cadets opened up strong with a pair of one-meter diving events, as
Reilly Laitala (Sterling, Mass.) and
Jack Brennan (Hopkinton, Mass.) captured individual victories to give Norwich a edge early. Tides began to turn from there, as the Owl women took wins in six-straight events before
Nikky Avise (Owens Cross Roads, Ala.) helped the Cadets to two of three-straight individual wins, taking the 50-yard free (25.33) and 100-yard free (55.38). Laitala picked up another win, this time in the three-meter dive.
Hannah Shaner (Gilbertsville, Penn.) earned her first win of the contest in the 500-yard free behind a 5:45.54 effort, before Avise closed out the women's victories with a 26.85 time in the 50-yard fly.
The men, meanwhile, enjoyed success immediately after Brennan's initial victory.Â
Adrian Riendeau (Ridgecrest, Calif),
Will Thompson (Downington, Penn.),
Nikita Ponamarenko (Mariupol, Ukraine), and
Ben Stark (Montverde, Fla.) enjoyed a dominant win in the 400-yard medley relay, before
Martin Adlianitski (Cheshire, Conn.) and Stark earned back-to-back individual victories in the 1000-yard free and 200-yard free, respectively.
Thompson would earn two individual wins in the 50-yard breast (28.48) and 100-yard breast (1:02.10), while Ponamarenko scooped up the top spot in the 100-yard fly (56.15). Adlianitski also tallied two more wins, taking the 50-yard free (22.85) and 100-yard free (49.68). Brennan checked back in halfway through the meet to post a 176.85 score in the three-meter dive.
Riendeau, the reigning Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Rookie of the Week, posted a 58.84 in the 100-yard back and a 2:09.18 in the 200-yard IM to continue the stellar start to his freshman campaign. Stark, who is coming off GNAC Athlete of the Week honors, finished his afternoon in individuals by taking the 500-yard free.Â
Derek Furtado (Plymouth, Mass.) was the other Cadet to snag an individual win with a 25.39 time in the 50-yard fly.
Furtado,
Michael Cownhoven (Fairfield, Conn.), Adlianitski, and Stark rounded out Norwich's impressive showing, clocking in at 1:32.09 for a two-second edge over a Keene State squad in the 200-yard free relay.
Both the men's and women's swimming & diving teams will return to action next weekend, returning to the friendly confines of Goodyear Pool for a 12:00 p.m. meeting against Regis College and Babson College on Saturday, Nov. 12.
