NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's rugby team fell to Brown University 44-12 during its 50 years of Norwich Rugby celebration on Saturday afternoon at the Dog River Pitch.
Junior center Yandres Cintron (Vegabaja, Puerto Rico) and freshman back Anthony Kowalski (Yamhill, Ore.) each scored tries for the Cadets, but the Division I Bears proved to be too much for Norwich.
Brown built up a 10-0 lead by halftime with tries from Ollie Corbett and Duncan Grant at the 7:10 and 37:58 mark.
Norwich junior Leo Clayburgh (Brussels, Belgium) had a penalty kick opportunity on the final play of the first half, but his long kick attempt sailed just left of the goalpost.
Cintron opened the second half scoring with an impressive try run from 35 yards out, cutting it back near the sideline and then racing towards goal to cut the deficit to 10-5.
Brown's Raphael Lansonneuer accounted for the next 10 points, hitting a penalty kick at the 46:25 mark and then scored on a try at the 48:39 mark. He had a successful conversion to push the lead to 20-5.
Brown's Hudson Lee and Will Eveld added tries at the 54:00 and 62:15 mark to make it 32-5. Corbett scored again for his second try of the match to make it 37-5. Eveld added his second try to make it 44-5 at the 72:10 mark.
Norwich capped the scoring at the 75:45 mark with Kowalski scoring in first collegiate match. Clayburgh hit the conversion to make it 44-12.
Norwich will return to action next Saturday when it travels to Dartmouth for an 11:00 a.m. matchup with the Big Green.
