Box Score BARRE, Vt. – The Norwich University women's basketball game won their second consecutive game, coming back from 15-points down to take down NVU Johnson 77-72 in a non-conference matchup, Friday afternoon in the Granite City Shootout.
Haley Brewster (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored 36 points in the contest, scoring 23 points in the fourth quarter, while pulling down 15 boards for a double-double. Silas Bernier (Jaffrey, N.H.) added another 15-points and dishing out four assists in the game.
After a high scoring first quarter saw the Cadets holding an 18-17 lead, the Badgers took control taking a lead 1:09 into the second quarter when Paris Atuahene converted on a lay-in attempt, the Cadets were able to outscore the Cadets 26-10 taking a 43-28 lead into halftime.
After Maren McGinn (Georgia, Vt.) scored the opening bucket of the half Atuahene scored to keep the lead at 15. The Badgers were able to keep the Cadets down by 15 until 1:23 remained in the third quarter when Erika Thomas (Burlington, N.C.) made a layup to begin cutting into the lead. Skylar Burzynski (Orange, Conn.) hit a three-pointer with 13 second remaining in the third to cut the lead to single digits.
With 5:36 remaining in the contest, Brewster hit a layup bring the Cadets to within six. Rachel Botala (Grand Isle, Vt.) was able to come back on their following possession, converting a layup, the Badgers then led 62-58.
With 3:59 remaining in the final frame, Bernier again found a lane to the basket to even things up a 62-62. The Badgers converted a pair of shots from the free throw line, before Brewster came back on the other end and nailed a three-point jumper giving the Cadets their first lead in over 25 minutes of play.
Norwich jumped out to a 71-66 lead with 2:38 remaining in the fourth, before NVU Johnson rattled off six straight points to retake the lead. Bernier and Brewster then each hit a bucket to give the Cadets the lead permanently.
Norwich (2-3, 0-0 GNAC) will not play until Friday, Dec. 3 at 6 p.m. when they host Colby-Sawyer in the opener for the Hockenbury Classic. The winner of that game will then play the winner of the Hamilton vs. Wellesley contest the following day.
