Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University men's soccer team shutout the Blazers of Elms College 3-0 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium Wednesday evening.
Junior striker Joseph Thongsythavong (Salem, Mass.) netted two goals to finish his regular season with 20 tallies, as well as providing an assist as the Cadets won their 10th-consecutive game. Freshman midfielder Mamadi Jiana (Chicopee, Mass.) netted the other NU tally while junior goalkeeper Robert Wagenseller (Poway, Calif.) collected his seventh shutout of the season, making five saves in the win.
Thongsythavong got the offense rolling early as he collected a feed from junior midfielder Hunter Lortie (Manchester, N.H.), beat a defender in a physical battle and buried a shot to the low left corner for a 1-0 Cadet lead at 9:36. Joe struck again at the 29:48 mark as he chipped the Elms keeper off a pass from junior midfielder Noel Rios (El Paso, Texas) for a 2-0 lead.
After the halftime break, Jiana took a nice pass from Thongsythavong I the 18 and turned and fired a point-blank shot for his fifth goal of the year at 58:17.
The Cadets finish the regular season at 13-2 overall and 10-1 in the GNAC while Elms falls to 6-11 and 4-7 in league play. Norwich will host a GNAC Quarterfinal contest on Saturday, October 30th at a time still to be determined.
