NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's rugby team had nine different try scorers in an impressive 60-15 win over Providence College on Saturday afternoon in New England Wide Collegiate Rugby Conference (NEWCRC) action.
Junior captain Leo Clayburgh (Brussels, Belgium) scored two tries, while Anthony Kowalski (Yamhill, Ore.), Travis Bartniski (Cypress, Texas), Jacob Sherman (Gahanna, Ohio), Ben Steen (Sandwich, Mass.), Jack Tellifson (Bow, N.H.), Ahmad A Bitang (Vero Beach, Fla.), Michael McLaughlin (Norwalk., Conn.) and Yandres Cintron (Vegabaja, Puerto Rico) each scored one.
Norwich (2-1, 2-0 NEWCRC) scored the first 26 points of the game and led 38-5 at halftime.
Clayburgh opened the scoring in the 6th minute with his first try of the game and fifth of the season to make it 5-0. Kowalski followed up in the ninth minute with a try and successful conversion from Clayburgh to make it 12-0.
Bartniski touched down for a converted try in the 20th minute to make it 19-0 Norwich. Sherman scored in the 23rd minute with a conversion from Clayburgh to make it 26-0 Cadets.
Providence finally got on the board in the 30th minute, but Norwich tacked on two more tries from Steen and a converted try from Tellfison to make it 38-5 heading into the halftime break.
Clayburgh opened the second-half scoring with his second of the game and sixth of the season to push the lead to 43-5.
Providence scored back-to-back tries in in the 46th and 65th minute to cut the lead to 43-15.
However, Norwich rattled off three more tries from A Bitang, McLaughlin and Cintron to cap the scoring.
Clayburgh finished 5-for-10 on conversions to account for 20 of Norwich's points.
Norwich will host No. 3 ranked Univ. of Vermont on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 2 p.m. on the Dog River Pitch. The Cadets are ranked fourth in the latest National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) Division II Rankings.
