Box Score BOSTON - The Norwich University men's soccer team clinched a home GNAC Tournament playoff game with a 2-1 victory over Emmanuel College on Saturday afternoon at Clemente Field in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.
Junior Joseph Thongsythavong (Salem, Mass.) extended his scoring streak to seven straight games with a goal and an assist to lead the Cadets to the crucial three points in the GNAC standings. Norwich strengthend its hold on the No. 2 spot in the league standings with the win with three games left in the regular season.
Amerle Nemeye (Burlington, Vt.) opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a double-header from Thongsythavong and a corner-kick service from Alex Brannan (Oneonta, N.Y.). The goal was Nemeye's seventh of the season and gave the Cadets a 1-0 lead.
Emmanuel's leading scorer Alec Erskine scored his team-leading 10th goal of the season in the 27th minute to level the score at 1-1.
Thongsythavong scored his team-leading 16th goal of the season in the 85th minute, scoring off a through ball from Dante Maninci (Hopedale, Mass.) to lift Norwich to the crucial road victory.
Norwich outshot Emmanuel 15-12. Norwich junior goalkeeper Robert Wagenseller (Poway, Calif.) made six saves to pick up his 10th victory of the season.
Norwich (10-2, 8-1 GNAC) will host NVU Lyndon on Monday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. in its final non-conference game of the season. It will also serve as Norwich's Senior Day.
