Box Score BOSTON, Mass. - The Norwich University women's volleyball team fell to Great Northeast Athletics Conference opponent Simmons, Friday night at the Holmes Sports Center, 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-19).
The Cadets were led by Sarah Farnum (North Andover, Mass.) who had 25 assists in the match while adding a kill and six digs. Ana Lopez (Laredo, Texas) was the leader in kills with 10, while hitting .500, and Laura Farnum (North Andover, Mass.) led the defensive effort with 9 digs.
Maggie McNeil (Gilford, N.H.) added eight kills while, Julia Schroeder (Victorville, Calif.) added another four.
In the first set, Simmons jumped out to an 14-5 lead before Norwich was able to close the deficit to 16-12. Simmons then used a 9-5 run to to end the first set.
After conceding the first five points, the Cadets used a 5-2 run to close the gap in the set at 7-5, Norwich was able to close the deficit to as close as one point after a service ace by Schroeder brought the Cadets to 14-13.
The Sharks then used a six-point run to hold off Norwich in a competitive second set.
Simmons (9-3, 3-1 GNAC) used a four-point run in the third set to, set up a following three-point sequence to go up 7-2. After trading points in the later parts of the third set the Sharks closed out the contest with a kill by Sydney Iannantuono, who had 13 kills in the match.
Norwich (5-5, 0-3 GNAC) will prepare to face the Spartans of Castleton on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 6 p.m. The Cadets will then face off in a tri-match on Saturday, Oct. 9, when they host Rivier and Saint Joseph's College in Andrews Hall.
