Box Score 2 NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Norwich University softball team opened up the 2020 season with an impressive sweep of Penn State Abington and Wells College to open the Fastpitch Dreams Classic spring break trip.
Senior second baseman Katie Reid (Gilbert, Ariz.) blistered the ball all afternoon, going 7-for-7 at the plate with three RBIs to lead the Cadets' offense on the day.
Norwich defeated Penn State Abington 10-1 in 6 innings to open the day and then followed up with an 18-7 win over Wells College in the night cap.
Junior third baseman Madelyn Folcik (Wilmot, N.H.) had four hits a team-leading six RBIs on the day as well.
Norwich pounded out 22 hits and 18 runs in just four innings at the plate in the Wells' victory. Sophomore centerfielder Dara Kelly (Chesterfield, N.J.) went 4-for-4 with four RBIs and and three runs scored from the leadoff spot.
Senior pitcher Brittany Vandergroef (Lodi, N.J.) went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and also picked up the victory on the mound after throwing two innings.
Every Norwich starter notched a hit in the Wells game.
In Game 1, Norwich scored three runs in the top of the second and then added seven more in the top of the sixth to pull away after leading 3-1 for most of the game.
Reid had four hits in the first game and Folcik had four RBIs to deliver big blows at the plate in the win.
Junior first baseman Caitlin Dailey (Topsham, Maine) had two hits and a RBI as well.
Vandergroef threw all six innings and gave up no earned runs on three hits and four strikeouts to pick up the victory in the circle.
Norwich will look to keep up the momentum on Tuesday when it takes on Penn. College at 9:30 a.m. and then Lycoming College at 11:30 a.m.
