Box Score 2 NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Norwich University softball team fell twice on the second day of the Fastpitch Dreams Classic on Tuesday at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.
Norwich (2-2) fell 11-3 in a six-inning game vs. Penn. College in its first game and then dropped a 5-4 extra-inning heartbreaker to Lycoming College in its second game of the day.
In Game 2, after a scoreless first five innings, Norwich scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning with Makenna Wade (Pensacola, Fla.) scoring on a passed ball to start the scoring binge. Elizabeth Niven (Londonderry, N.H.) singled to center field to score Caitlin Dailey (Topsham, Maine) and then Sydney Parkhurst (Barrington, R.I.) delivered the big blow with a two-run single to right field to score Madelyn Folcik (Wilmot, N.H.) and Niven.
Norwich was unable to hold the lead though as Lycoming scored four runs of its own in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game. Kayla Kline delivered the big blow with a triple to center field to score three runs on the play and tie the game up at 4-4 with one out.
Norwich was unable to score in the top of the eighth inning and Lycoming tacked on the winning run after a lead off walk and an error on the next play led to Kacee Reitz coming around to score on Darci Warringer's single through the left side.
Brittany Vandergroef (Lodi, N.J.) took the loss after allowing five earned runs on 10 hits and four walks while striking out four to fall to 2-1 on the season.
In Game 1, Katie Reid (Gilbert, Ariz.) had two hits and two RBIs to lead the offense, but Penn College had a balanced offense, scoring a run in every inning en route to the 11-3 victory.
Wade had Norwich's only other hit in the game, while Dara Kelly (Chesterfield, N.J.) and Annona Farello (Silver Spring, Md.) scored runs.
The Cadets have a day off on Wednesday before returning to the diamond on Thursday for another doubleheader, starting with Clarks Summitt at 11:30 a.m. and then following up with La Roche at 1:30 p.m.
