Men's Tennis: Baldwin Wallace stings Norwich, 8-1 to close spring break trip

BEREA, Ohio - The Norwich University men's tennis team closed its spring break trip with an 8-1 loss to Baldwin Wallace on Friday.

Norwich (4-5) finished its six matches in seven days trip with a 3-3 record after falling 8-1 for the second straight day.

Senior Sam Beiter (Youngstown, Ohio) won No. 3 singles rallying from losing the first set 6-4, to win the second set 6-4. Beiter and Jake Elbin then played a 10-point pro-set instead of a third full set, which Beiter emerged victorious from 10-8. Beiter improved to 3-6 on the season in singles action with the win.

Norwich nearly had wins at No. 2 singles and No. 6 singles, but Alexi Gilmore (Haverhill, Mass.) and Abbie Barker (Warren, Vt.) each dropped three-set heartbreakers with the third set decided by 10-point pro-sets as well.

Barker and junior Timothy Birnbaum (Mahwah, N.J.) also took a tough loss at No. 3 doubles, falling 8-7 with an 8-6 loss in the tiebreaker. 

Norwich returns to Vermont on Wednesday, March 20 to take on intrastate rival Castleton University at 4 p.m. in Rutland. The Cadets will play their first conference match of the season on Saturday, March 23 when they host Johnson & Wales (RI) at 1 p.m. in Shapiro Field House.
