Men's Soccer: Norwich drops Rivier, 5-0

Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's soccer team scored twice in the opening 2:01 en route to a 5-0 victory over Rivier University on Wednesday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.

Sophomore Amerle Nemeye (Burlington, Vt.) scored a goal and had two assists, while classmate Alex Brannan (Oneonta, N.Y) had a goal and an assist to lead the Cadets' offense. Joseph Thongsythavong (Salem, Mass.) added two assists for Norwich.

Brannan opened the scoring just 1:30 into the game with a rocket blast into the top right corner of the net after a Rivier clear attempt landed at his feet 35 yards out from goal.

Staige Davis (Shelburne, Vt.) scored his first goal of the season just 31 seconds later, burying a shot into the left corner of the net after a crossing pass from Nemeye was flicked over by Thongsythavong before Davis finished the chance off.

Nemeye scored his eighth goal of the season at the 37:15 mark, side volleying a shot in midair into the right side of the net off a great feed from Dashiell Vermilya from the left wing.

Senior Josue Lopez (Chula Vista, Calif.) scored with a strike into the right side of the net off another setup from Thongsythavong and Nemeye.

Andrew Kalombo (Worcester, Mass.) capped the scoring in the 77th minute, burying a ball into the right side of the net off a corner kick service from Brannan from the left side to make it 5-0 Norwich.

Norwich outshot Rivier 31-1 and had nine corner kicks while holding the Raiders without one.

Freshman Robert Wagenseller (Poway, Calif.) made one save to pick up his 11th victory of the season. He earned a team shutout with Jacob Wiggins (Willington, Conn.), who was untested in 26:03 of action in the second half to complete the clean sheet.

Norwich improved to 11-3-1 on the season and 6-2-1 in GNAC play.

The Cadets will host Regis (Mass.) at 4 p.m. on Saturday as they host their annual Senior Day. NU will then close out the regular season on Wednesday, when it hosts Lasell at 7 p.m.
