Baseball: Cadets Collect First Win in Twinbill Split

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Norwich University baseball team competed against Anna Maria College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action on Sunday afternoon.

The Cadets rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh inning to take game one 8-5, but the AMCATS walked-off with a 2-1 win in game two.

In game one, Norwich took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as junior catcher Chris Leach (Vergennes, Vt.) reached on an error that allowed sophomore third baseman Andrew Fisher (Tewsbury, Mass.) to score.

Anna Maria scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning and two more in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-1 lead.

In the top of the sixth, Fisher ripped a triple to right-center that plated junior centerfielder Kevin Lynch (Randolph, Mass.) to make it 5-2. Senior designated hitter Ed Gates (Griswold, Conn.) reached on an error, Fisher scored on the play to cut the score to 5-3.

Junior first baseman Jacob Barlow (Newburyport, Mass.) lifted a clutch two-run homer to left field, scoring freshman pinch-runner Koby Foster (Estill Springs, Tenn.) and knotting the game 5-5. Later in the inning, Lynch reached on a fielder's choice, scoring junior second baseman Mike Lesco (Somers, Conn.) to take a 6-5 lead. Fisher and sophomore leftfielder Brady Doherty (Sandwich, Mass.) added RBI singles to make it 8-5.

Gates came on in relief and collected the win after allowing just one hit and one walk in two innings. He struck out two batters and improves to 1-3 on the season.

In game two, sophomore catcher Jake Godbee (Ormond Beach, Fla.) opened up the scoring in the top of the fourth inning with an RBI single to left-center field. Fisher scored on the play to make it 1-0 Cadets.

The Cadets led into the bottom of the seventh inning before AMCATS left fielder Noah Holland hit a walk-off home run to left field to take the 2-1 win.

Freshman Luke Johansen (Doylestown, Penn.) was saddled with the loss despite allowing just two earned runs on three hits over six and one-third innings of work. He struck out seven batters and allowed just one walk while falling to 0-2 on the season.

The Cadets now stand at 1-15 overall and 1-1 in conference play while the AMCATS sit at 10-15 overall and 1-5 in the GNAC. Norwich is next in action on Wednesday, April 11th for a non-conference game at Gordon College. That game is set for 4:00 p.m.
